Scope and Exchange

What I am building

A website for your Wing Chun teaching. The structure is laid out in your sitemap, and this agreement covers building what is described there.

The site launches in two phases, so you have somewhere to send anyone interested in your teaching while the full website is being built.

The site is built as a static website, so there is no login or database to maintain. It loads quickly, it is inexpensive to host, and there is very little on it that can be attacked. Site edits come through me, which you mentioned is a preference.

Included website functionality and features

• Discovery. Site and page structure, which we are currently building.
• Design. A style direction you choose from options I put in front of you, then wireframes, then full designs of every page.
• Copywriting. I write and shape the copy for the site from your recordings and our conversations. You read it and correct it.
• A temporary wordmark logo. Your name set as the site's identity, possibly with a simple graphic mark. This is not a full logo, see below.
• Development. Both phases, every page, working on phones and desktops.
• An inquiry form, with the questions that help you get a sense of someone before you call them back. Submissions go to your email.
• A booking page with your availability, reached by a link you send after you have spoken to someone.
• Your waiver. Set up as a form for online signature.
• Twelve months of care from the full launch. Hosting, backups, security, uptime monitoring, and page changes or site edits.

What is not included

These are not a part of the initial site build.

• Photography. The site needs real photographs of you teaching, and this is the item most likely to hold up the launch. If your own search and the old school's archive come up short, we can plan a session.
• A full logo. A full emblem is its own project. A wordmark carries the launch, and we can design the emblem later once you have a feel for what it should be.
• Business cards and print. Separate from this project.
• Legal review of your waiver. I will put your waiver online and word the signing correctly. Whether the waiver itself protects you is a question for a lawyer.
• Business setup, licensing, insurance or tax advice. Outside my field. A legal or financial advisor is the right person for these.
• Card payment on the site. Not set up at launch. It needs a business entity behind it, so it is on the list for a later phase.

The exchange

As you suggested, we are trading Wing Chun training for web design and development. Here are the numbers on both sides, so we are both working from the same figures.

Two practical notes

• Sessions happen when I am in San Francisco, so there is no set schedule to keep to.
• The website is finished and yours regardless of where the session count stands.

After the first twelve months

Once the care year is up, the site still needs looking after. That covers updates, backups, security, and the small changes that come up. If it suits you, that can carry on as an exchange too.

Your action items

• Photographs and video of you teaching and practicing, whatever you can find, plus the answer on reusing the old school's archive.
• The About page, confirmed line by line. Nothing about your lineage or about Chris Chan gets published until you have read it and told me it is right. We can schedule a dedicated session to review and discuss information that will go on the website.
• Which number you call people back from, your own or a separate one.
• Any social accounts you want linked, or a note that there are none yet.

Terms

Who owns what

You own it. The website, the words, the images, the domain and the wordmark are yours, and the web address is registered in your name rather than mine. I keep the right to show the finished site as an example of my work, and I would like a short testimonial from you at launch, which you are free to decline.

If we need to pause

Schedules move around and a quiet stretch is not a problem. If about a month goes by without us connecting, I would check in and we can park the project until the timing suits you better. Nothing is lost while it waits and it is easy to pick back up.

If either of us wants to stop

Either of us can end this, for any reason, by saying so. You keep whatever has been built to that point. Sessions already given and work already done are settled between us, and neither of us owes the other a balance in money or in training.

What I do not cover

I am responsible for building and looking after the website. I am not responsible for legal, tax, insurance or business-licensing questions, for whether your waiver holds up, or for outages at services I do not run. Where I know something useful I will say so, and I will tell you when I am out of my depth.
